Below is a very nice photo of the students at Geigerville School in the 1947 – 1948 school year. Geigerville is subcommunity of Rush KY. Rush KY straddled the Boyd County KY, Carter County KY line. Geigerville School was just barely inside Carter County.

The photo was kindly loaned to me by one of the students in the photo, Harold Bates. Harold was the son of the teacher in this photo, Thelma Hereford Bates (1907 – 1998). Harold and his family lived nearby. Harold and his Mom typically walked to this school, but they actually lived in Boyd County. A few years later Thelma Bates started teaching 1st grade at Cannonsburg Elementary in Boyd County and taught there for many years.

Harold identified every student in the photo by writing their names on the back. Harold indicated he had accomplished this name listing shortly after the photo was taken, when he was about 10 years old.

I have another Williams Creek Basin Article regarding Geigerville that includes a photo of this one room Geigerville Elementary School. Just click on this line to see that article and photo.
