Below are scans of two tickets / receipts from “East Fork & Rush Bus”. This was a privately owned bus service that picked up students headed to Boyd County High School (BCHS) at Cannonsburg KY from the cited communities. In that era there were no free public school buses.

These tickets are for my Mother, Frances Marie “Ty” Tiller, later Coleman, (1921 – 1999). The fees for the bus appear to be about $5.00 per month. Mom’s slightly younger sister, Minnie Tiller, later Gee (1922 – 1997) would have also required this expense. In this Great Depression time frame, I am sure this would have been a huge expense for the Tiller family.
Mom and sister Minnie were in the same class and graduated together in the BCHS Class of 1938. Mom was only 17 and Minnie was just 15 when they graduated. These receipts would have been from Mom and Minnie’s Sophomore year at BCHS.
Eloise Tuffs, later Pennington (1922 – 2013), also lived at Rush KY and graduated from BCHS in 1940. Eloise used this bus service. Her daughter, Kaye Pennington-Westcott, indicated her Mother, Eloise, would not have been able to attend Boyd County High School had not her Uncle, Ed Deerfield (1893 – 1989), been able to provide the $5.00 monthly bus fee.
Looks like the manager was J L McCormack. I suspect he was also the bus driver. In the 1940 US Census there is a John L McCormack living in the East Fork area on what was then US 23 (KY SR 3 now) running a grocery store, possibly this is the manager. This store was at the mouth of Bolt’s Fork, where Bolt’s Fork empties into East Fork (of the Little Sandy River) right beside what was then US 23 (now KY SR 3).
Enjoy! Lon
