James M. “Jim” Prichard has written a very nice article, see the link below, regarding the Civil War actions in The Williams Creek Basin and nearby war actions. Jim details the important actions, the players, and their activities in the area.
Jim received a BA and MA in History from Wright State University in Dayton, OH. He supervised the Kentucky State Archives Research Room from 1985 to 2008 and was employed as a Cataloger, Special Collections, at the Filson Historical Society in Louisville, Kentucky from 2013 to 2022.
Jim grew up in Dayton OH but his parents were from Carter County KY. Jim spent several summers at his grandparents home in Hitchens KY in Carter County, very close to The Williams Creek Basin, so he is very familiar with the area of The Williams Creek Basin.
Jim has researched the Civil War in Northeast KY for over 50 years and has a special interest in the Civil War Confederate Raiders, like Captain Algernon Sidney “Sid” Cook, the primary protagonist in many of the raids in The Williams Creek Basin.
In late October 2024, Jim and I visited the site of the ruins of the Star, Buena Vista, and Princess Iron Furnaces. We also walked through the Princess Tunnel from the Princess side to the Hi Carbon side.
